ICYMI: ProsperUS Featured in The Salt Lake Tribune

Today marks the last day of the Justice in Recovery State and Local Week of Action hosted by ProsperUS, a coalition of 80+ leading progressive labor, grassroots, movement, faith-based, small business, and policy organizations that believes our government should invest in people.

As ProsperUS activist Valerie Novack wrote in The Salt Lake Tribune

“There’s no place like home and every person deserves to have one that is safe and affordable so they can live their lives with dignity. It’s time for our leaders in Utah to deliver deep public investments to strengthen tenant protections, expand access to quality housing and build an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthiest few.”

Each day of the #ProsperUS State and Local Week of Action focused on one of five urgent issues:  climate justice, education, public health, housing justice, and care work. Here’s what the coalition had to say:

Climate Justice

Southern Economic Advancement Project: The only thing we like boiling are our crawfish, not our climate. As temperatures in the South continue to rise, we call for systems change rather than climate change. #ProsperUS | @Groundwork

Colorado Fiscal Institute: Our new research shows Colorado's communities of color and areas of the state reliant on agriculture and outdoor recreation face some of the greatest barriers to climate resilience. Colorado needs #ClimateAction that acknowledges these inequities! #ProsperUS #copolitics

Education

Center for American Progress: What’s hot: Cancelling student debt and increasing GDP, generating jobs, & increasing investment in areas like housing or small business creation

What’s not: A cycle that keeps younger generations, disproportionately Black & brown people, unable to build wealth #ProsperUS

Liberation in a Generation: Workers joining together to demand a workplace that works for them. A just higher education system and cancellation of predatory student debt. More #ProsperUS conditions for EVERYONE.

Public Health

Congressional Progressive Caucus Center: An investment in clean air, water, and housing is also an investment in public health. We must approach these concurrent crises together because it will be better for all of our communities in the long run. #ProsperUS

Autistic Self Advocacy Network: Disabled people have borne the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet due to ableism and systemic disinvestment in our public health infrastructure, we can only guess the scale. #ProsperUS

Housing Justice

California Immigrant Policy Center: We need to strengthen protections for tenants and guarantee equitable access to affordable/safe housing. Immigrant families & BIPOC folx face even greater housing challenges due to exclusion from housing assistance programs and frequent discrimination from landlords. #ProsperUS

NRCDV: Housing is a human right and we should act. like. it. Investing in public housing, building the supply of #AffordableHousing, & providing people with access to housing are powerful economic tools to prevent & respond to DV.

Care Work

Labor Project: Child care, home health care, elder care - we need it ALL! Invest in these systems so everyone has access to the care they need. #ProsperUS

Groundwork Collaborative: We can’t say this enough: government should be used to help people and their families meet their most basic needs. A just recovery requires large-scale, equitable investments in the care work that drives our economy. #ProsperUS
