New Poll: Majority of Voters Want More Spending, 61% Back $10 Trillion Recovery Package
61% of likely voters support larger package than Biden’s proposals, including 53% of independents)
57% of voters want more economic relief now and say we can’t afford to wait, with particularly strong support among younger voters and voters of color.
Washington, DC — A new poll released today from ProsperUS, the Green New Deal (GND) Network, and Data For Progress shows that the nearly $2 trillion American Rescue Plan has not dampened voters’ appetite for additional pandemic relief, as well as even more spending on a sizeable economic recovery package—with little regard to cost.
The new poll found that 61 percent of voters, including 53% of Independents, support a $10 trillion economic recovery package. By a 26-point margin, the poll also showed that 57 percent of voters want more relief now, even when reminded that Congress passed a rescue package in March. Black and Latinx voters, whose communities have been hit hardest by the pandemic and the recession it triggered, were especially supportive of more relief.
“This new polling shows that voters across the political spectrum see relief packages passed and government spending up until this point as only a down payment on a full recovery, not the end of the public investment needed to get us out of this crisis and build a stronger, more sustainable economy,” said Claire Guzdar, ProsperUS campaign manager and spokesperson.
“An overwhelming majority of voters understand that millions of families and workers are still hurting, and that our path to recovery is still ongoing. Young people and people of color, those most affected by the crises we face, are most supportive. Simply put, more is required to ensure that we build a more resilient, equal economy that works for more people.”
The poll also found that:
67% of Black voters support passing additional economic relief now, not later
60% of Latinx voters support passing additional economic relief now
66% of younger voters (voters under age 45) support passing additional economic relief now
69% percent of voters, including 88% of Democrats, 59% of Independents, and 55% of Republicans, support a generic recovery bill
The survey was conducted with 1,730 likely voters from April 21 - April 25, 2021.
